Portal DSOGaming noticed that a Swiss 3D artist under the pseudonym Haraldinowitch decided to show what a remake of the classic quest Grim Fandango from LucasArts could look like.
Despite its venerable age (the game turned 25 last fall), Grim Fandango’s stylized graphics make it look less archaic than other 1998 hits (see Resident Evil 2 or Metal Gear Solid).
At the same time, as Haraldinowitch showed in his recent video, Grim Fandango would benefit from a full-fledged remake on a modern engine (the artist used Unreal Engine 5).
For the demonstration, Haraldinowitch chose the opening scene of Grim Fandango, in which the main character, Death Department employee Manny Calavera, is looking for a suitable tourist tour for the hapless Kelso Flores.
The episode is recreated in detail (down to every angle) and demonstrates the advantages of Unreal Engine 5 such as support for 60 fps or better shadows. A version of the scene from the original game is embedded below.
In the comments, users appreciated the work of Haraldinowitch and expressed a desire to see a full-fledged remake of Grim Fandango. “Now I want the whole game like this”— shared zAllex Music.
The original Grim Fandango debuted in October 1998 on PC, and received a remaster in 2015 from Double Fine Productions. The re-release was eventually released on PC, Linux, Mac, PS4, PS Vita, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.
