Bungie is no longer using the feature that would effectively “sunset” older Destiny 2 weapons by slapping them with Power limits. This plan was made public three years ago and had been controversial throughout its entire run.
In a sizable blog post (via IGN), the Washington-based developer revealed that it officially reversing the move, which was implemented due to power creep, meaning high-level players even with older weapons would be able to blow past new content, making it difficult to produce new stuff.
Of course, Bungie has changed tactics from this controversial method to simply nerfing the guns to hopefully balance it with the new sandbox Destiny 2 experience. Unfortunately, as this has been three years after the plan was finalized, many players have already scrapped the old weapons in favor of the more viable firearms of new. Even more unfortunately, there is no recovery mechanism for those who have dismantled the firearms.
Naturally, the announcement has caught mixed reception, with some happy to see this rule lifted, while others feel betrayed by the developer for reversing a feature that the community was repeatedly told was here to stay.
“We understand that many old Power limited items have been dismantled by this point, and we regret that we have no recovery mechanism for these. Going forward, we intend to reintroduce sources for most or all of these, updated to modern Destiny sandbox standards with added properties such as Origin Traits and buildcrafting perks (as we have started to do with the BRAVE arsenal in Destiny 2: Into the Light).”
